Energy Efficiency Tips

You can save energy dollars by following these simple tips. Many of them are common sense suggestions that require no tools or out of pocket expense. Over time, you will see your energy efficiency increase and your energy savings multiply.

* Clean or replace filters at least once a month.
* Dirty filters make your system work harder and run longer than necessary.
* They also encourage the buildup of mold and mildew, making cleaning more difficult.

Shade outside air conditioning units (condensers).
A/C units shaded by trees or other means work more efficiently and use up to 10% less electricity.

* Clean your AC's condenser/evaporator coils at the beginning of the season.
* Clean coils lower your energy costs, extend the unit's life and provide cleaner air for you to breathe.
* The fin coils on the outside AC unit can be washed with a hose.
* Coils on inside units may be difficult to get to and may require a trained technician.

* Keep debris and high grass away from the condenser. These obstacles block the airflow to the unit. Blockage makes the condenser work harder and run longer.

* Set your thermostat at 78 in the summer and 68 in the winter.
Each degree cooler or warmer will increase your energy use by 6 to 8%. For instance, setting your thermostat at 72 in the summer could increase energy use by up to 40%. The same is true if you set your thermostat for higher energy use in the winter.
One of the best ways to save energy dollars is to use less air conditioning and heating.

* If you have central air conditioning, do not close vents in unused rooms.
This could increase pressure and cause leaks in your ducts. This does not apply to homes or apartments with window units where closing off unused rooms will reduce cooling costs and increase comfort.

* Consider new high efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps.
They use up to 40% less electricity than older models for the same amount of running time.

Your electric company may have programs available for lower-income and disabled people. Do the research or have a friend help you find out. I had a dear friend look into this for our family, and we will be getting help.

Constant you have those?

Constant flares, sometimes with less intensity. That is something we experience with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Cold or damp weather, poor sleep, fatigue, stress or over-exertion makes our pain worse.

Tingling (pares thesis) is a pins-and-needles sensation, like when the foot "falls asleep", is what we also experience on different parts of our bodies.

These are symptoms that are not apparent to the outside world, the people that see us day in and day out. I pray that friends and family try to educate themselves and try to understand the symptoms people with this terrible disease feel and try to deal with on a daily basis.

I pray and hope that this information has helped someone understand the pain and fatigue we feel daily. I also pray for pain free days for anyone experiencing these symptoms.

One's Attitude

* Exercise. Even a short walk can improve your mood and reduce stress.

An AHRQ-convened panel of researchers went a step further—identifying 11 drugs on the list that should be avoided entirely by older patients:

* Barbiturates such as burabarbital, secobarbital, and pentobarbital. These sedative hypnotics, or tranquilizers, can cause unconsciousness and death in large doses. They also are associated with serious withdrawal problems.
* Flurazepam. Similar to Valium, this drug can cause sedation, putting older people at increased risk for falls. Better agents and shorter-acting ones are available.
* Meprobamate. This older drug used for the treatment of anxiety is very sedating and highly addictive.
* Chlorpropamide. One of the first oral diabetes drugs, the drug can cause hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Shorter-acting and overall better drugs are available for older persons with diabetes.
* Meperidine. Better known as Demerol, this drug is a narcotic and can be sedating. Safer alternatives are available.
* Pentazocine. A narcotic known as Talwin, this drug acts as a painkiller. It causes confusion and hallucinations.
* Trimethobenzamide. Tigan is an anti-nausea drug that has central nervous system side effects. More effective drugs are available.
* Belladonna alkaloids. Along with the remaining drugs on this list, belladonna alkaloids relieve gastrointestinal spasms and generally should be avoided by older people. Side effects include dizziness, dry mouth and urinary retention.
* Dicyclomine. Like belladonna alkaloids, this drug relieves gastrointestinal spasms and generally should be avoided by older people. Side effects include dizziness, dry mouth and urinary retention.
* Hyoscyamine. Like belladonna alkaloids, this drug relieves gastrointestinal spasms and generally should be avoided by older people. Side effects include dizziness, dry mouth and urinary retention.

• Don't wait until chronic pain is too severe to treat. Pain is easier to prevent than treat. Begin to understand the kinds of medications that you might take if you begin to have pain.

• Demand comfort care in your advance directive. Be clear and assertive.

• Maintain a pain record. Note location, time of day, severity, and what relieved the pain. Share with your doctor or nurse.

• If you're receiving hospice care, identify your pain level for the nurse at each visit.

• Understand your doctor's orders for your pain medication. Make sure you understand the frequency, dose and type of medication. If you have questions, ask them.

• Insist that you have enough pain medication for weekends or holidays.

• Get the names and phone numbers of any doctors covering for your physician.

• If you are hospitalized and your pain is not being treated, ask to speak to the medical director or nursing supervisor.

• For end-of-life pain, expect medication amounts to increase rapidly.
